Ford Recalls 694,271 Escapes and Bronco Sports

Adding another to the growing list of recalls, Ford is recalling 355,227 examples of 2020-2022 Escape crossovers and 339,044 examples of 2021-2024 Bronco Sport crossovers. According to the recall report, these 1.5-liter-powered crossovers could have a fuel injector crack and cause a fire.

According to the NHTSA recall report, a crack in the fuel injector crack could cause fuel to leak, and if this fuel found its way to a hot surface like a turbocharger or exhaust manifold, it could start a fire. You can help catch this before a possible thermal event by checking for a gasoline smell.

The recall report notes that if you happen to get a fire, you’ll see smoke bellowing out from underneath the hood, and there should be a warning in the instrument cluster.

Fortunately, the recall report says that only 0.3% of the recalled vehicles will have the affected fuel injectors. That means over the combined 694,721 cars slated for a recall, there should only be 2,084 examples with these suspect fuel injectors.

According to the recall report, Ford is working on a remedy for the problem. In the interim, though, Ford will update the software for affected Escape and Bronco Sport models to “allow for detection of a cracked fuel injector and invokes a strategy to disable the high-pressure fuel pump, derate engine power output, and reduce temperatures of possible ignition sources in the engine compartment.” As you’d expect with a recall, this service will be performed free of charge.

Ford will notify owners on August 18, 2025, and has already informed its dealer network. Ford will also notify owners when a permanent remedy is developed. If you don’t want to wait for a letter, you can use Ford’s recall tool, here, or the NHTSA recall tool, here.
